If you're planning a Master's in Germany and your previous degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, you may have come across a new term in your APS documentation: dMAT. This short guide explains what the dMAT exam is, who it applies to, when it starts, and how it fits into the existing APS procedure so you know exactly what it means for your application.

What is the dMAT and what does it stand for?

If you've searched for the dMAT full form: dMAT stands for Digital Master Test. It is a standardised academic aptitude test that APS India is introducing step by step as an additional element in the APS documentation process for selected Master's applicant groups. It is not a university entrance exam in the traditional sense, and it does not replace APS document verification, the APS certificate, or any other part of the existing APS procedure.

The dMAT is a joint effort in test development between German universities and g.a.s.t. (the organisation that also administers TestAS). It consists of two parts: a core module, which measures general cognitive and analytical skills, and a subject module. For Indian applicants, this subject module is currently the General Academic Module, which tests the ability to apply those cognitive and analytical skills to academic problem-solving rather than testing memorised subject knowledge. Some other subject modules exist for specific German degree programmes - for example, a chemistry-focused subject module is used separately for the MSc Battery Science and Technology programme - but these are unrelated to the APS requirement described here.

You may see the test described elsewhere as the "digital master assessment test". The official name used by APS India and g.a.s.t. is simply the Digital Master Test (dMAT).

Who needs to take the dMAT exam for Germany?

Not all Indian students applying to German universities need the dMAT. The requirement currently applies to three previous-degree field groups:

Engineering
Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics
Business / Management

If your degree falls outside these groups - for example, Computer Science, Data Science, or most other natural science and humanities fields - the dMAT requirement does not currently apply to you. Fields such as Business Analytics can sit close to the Business/Management group, so if your degree title is not a clear match, don't classify it yourself.

When does the new dMAT requirement apply?

The dMAT requirement is tied to intake, not to when you happen to apply. It is required for applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 intake and subsequent Master's intakes. It does not apply to the Winter Semester 2026/27 intake.

A few transitional exemptions apply even within the affected fields. You do not need a dMAT certificate if, before 29 June 2026, you had already:

completed your APS online registration,
shipped your complete APS application documents, or
received your APS certificate for a completed procedure.

How does dMAT fit into the APS process?

It helps to think of dMAT as one additional step layered onto the existing APS certificate process for Indian students, not a separate process:

Submit your complete APS application documents through APS India as usual. All required academic documents, apart from the dMAT certificate, must be included in this initial submission.
If the dMAT requirement applies to you, register for a test date and take the test.
Submit your dMAT certificate once you receive it.
APS India checks the result and can then issue your APS certificate, which will reference the dMAT result.

Importantly, applicants may submit their APS documents before the dMAT certificate is available, and APS India can begin document verification in advance. However, APS can only complete the APS process and issue the APS certificate once the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked. The dMAT certificate is the only document that may be added to your file later - everything else needs to be complete from the start.

Good to know:

dMAT is not a stand-alone pass-or-fail test for APS. A low result does not automatically lead to APS refusal, and a dMAT certificate does not guarantee university admission. Each German university decides independently how it weighs a dMAT result, alongside its own entrance requirements so a strong or weak result affects individual programme decisions differently.

It also does not replace document verification, degree recognition, university-specific entry requirements or the university’s final admission decision.

Registration, test dates and locations of dMAT

g.a.s.t. (not APS India) handles dMAT registration, payment, test-centre booking, and issuing the dMAT certificate. APS India remains responsible only for APS document verification, not for administering the test itself.

For this first round, test centres are planned in several Indian cities, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. The final list of available test centres appears once registration opens on the official dMAT portal, so check availability directly there rather than assuming your city is included.
