German Language Courses at IU Cologne Campus

The German Language Courses are being introduced in Cologne as a first step to ensure high-quality delivery. Based on results and feedback, we will evaluate a broader rollout to our campus in Berlin.

No. At the moment, the German Language Courses are ONLY offered on-campus at our Cologne campus. 

Furthermore, you can use IU-approved platforms like SPEEX to practise German flexibly and at your own pace. You can also check out other free German learning resources via Sprachportal or startseite_node.

No, the courses are designed especially for beginners (Level A1).  

After completing the course, you will be able to communicate in simple German conversations, understand and apply basic grammar structures, navigate daily life in Germany more independently and build a strong foundation for further language learning. 

Good news: as a Pathway student, the German language course is already part of your curriculum. So you don't need to sign up for it separately!

No, the courses are fully optional! They are designed to support our students who want to improve their German for daily life & future career opportunities.

Yes. You may withdraw from the course within 14 days of the course start date without incurring any charges. After the 14 day withdrawal period has expired, the full course fee becomes payable.

The fee for the German language course is €100 per course. The invoice will be issued after the withdrawal period has ended, and payment is due within 30 days of receiving the invoice.

Yes, students will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course, depending on passing the written and oral exam.

Please note that the completion of the course does not result in an official language certificate. Students who require an official certificate may take an external language examination at a recognised examination provider.  

While your degree may be taught in English, learning German can make a big difference to your experience in Germany - both during your studies and after graduation. It helps you manage everyday life more easily (housing, healthcare, bureaucracy, part-time jobs), build friendships and integrate socially, and feel more confident navigating your surroundings.  

Most importantly, it can significantly expand your career options after graduation, since many German employers expect at least B2-level German proficiency, even in international companies. Learning the language gives you access to a wider job market and can make staying in Germany after your studies much easier.
