Why learn German at IU?
IU is an international university where all degree programmes are taught in English. This means you can focus on your studies from day one without needing any prior knowledge of German.
However, learning German can significantly enhance your career prospects and everyday life in Germany. Even basic language skills can boost your confidence in everyday situations and enhance your employability after graduation.
That’s why IU offers German language courses specifically designed for international students. These courses take place alongside your regular studies in a classroom-based environment similar to that of a language school. You will learn alongside fellow international classmates who are also starting from the basics, enabling you to develop practical language skills gradually while settling into life in Germany.
Your benefits
Improve your career prospects
German language skills are a major advantage in the job market. Many employers in Germany expect at least basic German, even in international environments. By starting early, you improve your chances of finding internships, working student positions, and long-term career opportunities after graduation. Strong communication skills can also help you feel more confident in professional and networking situations.
Navigate everyday life with confidence
From introducing yourself and making appointments to handling university processes and interacting with locals - you’ll gain practical language skills for everyday situations. Understanding German will help you become more independent, adapt to life in Germany more easily, and connect naturally with your new environment. It also helps you better understand cultural contexts and feel at home faster.
Learn by doing – practical & interactive
Our courses focus on active communication and practical application rather than theory alone. You will practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing through realistic everyday scenarios, interactive exercises, and guided conversations. This hands-on learning approach helps you build confidence step by step and apply your language skills directly in daily and academic situations.
