Master’s in Germany: Cost, Tuition Fees & Scholarships

Germany is known for affordable education and internationally recognised degrees at fees that compare favourably with other countries. When planning your budget for a Master's degree in Germany, it is helpful to think in terms of three categories: tuition fees, monthly expenses and one-off pre-arrival costs. Understanding all three before you apply is the best way to avoid financial surprises. Germany is home to more than 400 higher education institutions, including research-focused public institutions and career-oriented private ones. The fee structure differs between them.

Public universities are state-funded and charge no tuition fees for most Master’s programmes. All students pay a semester fee of around €100 to €400 per semester, covering administration, student services, and in most cases a national transport pass⁠.

German universities in the public sector are heavily research-focused and internationally well regarded. Some of the best-known public universities are Ludwig Maximilian University, Humboldt University and technical universities are TU Munich and RWTH Aachen.

The main limitation for international students: most programmes at public universities are taught in German. Without a German language certificate at B2 level or above, your options are considerably restricted. Institutions in Baden-Württemberg also charge an additional €1,500 per semester for non-EU students on top of the standard semester fee.

Our Tuition fees cover the full degree. There is also a one-time campus registration fee of €1,500. In addition, students pay about €208 per semester for the mandatory Deutschlandticket, which provides local transport.

Students in Germany typically need between €900 and €1,200 per month. Costs may be higher in larger cities, so your location and lifestyle will affect where in that range you land. We recommend budgeting around €1,150 each month to enjoy a comfortable standard of living.

Students under 30 enrolled full-time at a German university qualify for the subsidised statutory health insurance rate, currently between €140 to €150 per month⁠ with providers such as TK, AOK, or Barmer. Students over the age of 30 can register to public health insurance voluntarily but are not able to get a discount rate. They can register with a private health insurance provider.  

Your monthly budget will also depend on where in Germany you study. In big cities, rent and everyday expenses can push your monthly budget higher, while more affordable student cities can make the same budget stretch further.

Putting it all together, here is what a typical year looks like at a private university in Germany:

Germany’s value becomes clear when you compare total first-year costs across popular study destinations. With high quality education at top universities, Germany offers substantially lower tuition fees and monthly costs than the UK, US, or Australia. This is one of the primary reasons why the number of students choosing to study in Germany continues to grow each year.

In the UK, international Master’s students typically pay between £15,000 and £25,000 per year in tuition fees. However, these fees can go higher for certain programmes, particularly in fields such as business, engineering, and data science. Costs are also often higher at top universities or institutions based in London. Living expenses usually range from £900 to £1,400 per month, rising to around £1,400 to £2,000 per month in the capital.

In the US, international students at public universities pay between $25,000 and $40,000 per year and $50,000 to $70,000 at private institutions, with $18,000 to $36,000 per year in living costs depending on the city. In Australia, Master’s fees range from AUD 22,000 to AUD 50,000 per year, with monthly costs in major cities typically running AUD 1,800 to 3,200.
