Key specifics

What makes a bachelor's degree different from other educational qualifications?

  • An associate degree programme provides a foundational understanding of a subject but is generally less comprehensive than a bachelor's programme. It usually takes about two years of study and is often offered by community colleges.
  • A master's degree is a higher-level qualification that you can pursue after completing a bachelor's degree. It typically requires one or two years of specialised study. IU offers online master's degree programmes in a variety of subjects!
  • A doctorate is the highest level of academic achievement and involves several years of advanced study, independent research and the completion of a doctoral dissertation. A bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for entering a doctoral programme.

What are the benefits of pursuing a Bachelor Degree?

A Bachelor's degree sets the foundation for your education and strengthens your career opportunities. Based on your passion or the career path of your interest, you can choose a bachelor's degree program that can help give you a solid understanding of your field and make you a strong candidate in the job market.

  • Opportunity. A bachelor's degree establishes credibility and a level of expertise in your chosen field - making you a valuable asset to companies hiring in your industry. Additionally, it also qualifies you for a master's degree, which only enhances your job profile. A bachelor's degree also opens doors to tons of job opportunities - that can only double if you pursue it with a master's.
  • Educational foundation. An undergraduate degree programme offers in-depth knowledge and skills specific to your chosen field of study. This expertise prepares you for a career in your desired field, enabling you to create impact and contribute meaningfully.
  • Higher earning potential. Bachelor's degree graduates tend to earn higher salaries than high school diploma graduates. You can take advantage of a bachelor's degree to enhance your earning potential over the course of your career!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bachelor's degree?

A bachelor's degree or undergraduate degree is an educational qualification that you receive after you graduate from a specific programme of study. It is typically the first step of higher education that high school students can pursue once they graduate. Bachelor degrees help build a solid educational foundation in the subject of your interest, or passion, thereby making you a great candidate for a job in your field. Also, most master's degree programmes have bachelor's degrees in their entry requirements, which means you'll need one if you'd like to study further.

How many years is a bachelor's degree program?

Bachelor's degree programs are typically four years long. However, this often varies around the world and depends on the country, subject, the institution, method of study (whether full time or part time), whether the course is via distance learning or not and much more. In recent years, the usefulness of an online education is being more and more recognised, paving new ways to pursue an undergraduate programme - and this too has an impact on its duration.

Can I do an online bachelor's degree?

Yes, you can do an online bachelor's degree! AT IU, we believe that education needs to be flexible and accessible to everyone, which is why we offer online degrees in a variety of current, career-focused subjects. A bachelor of arts degree is typically focused on subjects within humanities, social sciences or liberal arts. It is a B.A. programme and prepares you for careers in the creative, cultural field or for higher academic endeavors in the same. The other popular type of bachelor is the bachelor of science or BSc degree, which focuses on subjects within the natural sciences, engineering, technology or mathematics.

Which bachelor's degree is best for an MBA?

There isn't a specific degree that is universally regarded as the best for an MBA. The field of study for your bachelor's study depends on your personal interests and career goals. Most MBA graduates come from diverse educational backgrounds such as business, finance, economics, engineering, or even liberal arts! However, something you can consider is to choose a bachelor's degree that aligns with your desired MBA specialisation or the industry you wish to work in. Ultimately, the best bachelor's degree for an MBA is one that equips you with relevant skills, knowledge, and a solid foundation for your chosen MBA specialization.

Can I do two bachelor's degrees at the same time?

Depending on the institution, the programmes and your time schedules, it could be possible to pursue two bachelor's degrees at the same time.
