Masters in Germany

• Completed degree from a public or officially recognised university/higher education institution*.   

• For 60-ECTS programmes, you must have already acquired 240 ECTS credits.    

• For 120-ECTS programmes, you will need to have 180 ECTS credits.    

• At least a “satisfactory” or Grade C equivalent earned in your previous education. 

  
  

*For some Master's programmes, it's required that you have achieved your undergraduate studies in a relevant field, gained one year of professional work experience, or have previous knowledge in certain subject areas before reaching 50% of your ECTS. You can look at the dedicated page of your desired programme for more information. 

Once your application and documents are submitted, you will be invited to a 15-minute online interview conducted by our admission team. During the interview we will discuss your academic background, reasons for pursuing further study, and career objectives. 

The interview is a required component of the eligibility check for international applicants. If you miss your interview, The invitation will be sent again to allow you to schedule a new appointment. You may reschedule the interview up to three times. After the third invitation, and if there is no attendance, IU will assume you are no longer interested. 

If the interview is not passed, admission screeners will review the reasons and provide recommendations for next steps. For example, if the reason is related to English skills, the team may suggest registering for an English course or improving conversation skills. Applicants may contact IU when they wish to retake the interview, at which point the application can be reactivated. 

We accept the following English language skills certificates*: 

• IELTS (at least 6.5 points)

• TOEFL (at least 90 points)

• Cambridge certificate (B2 First with min. score of 176)

*Proof must not be older than two years. 

Alternative ways to prove your English language skills: 

• Citizenship: If you are from a country where English is the official and educational language, your passport can serve as proof of English proficiency.

If you are a non-European Union / international student, you will likely need a German student visa to study in Germany. To obtain a student visa, you generally need an acceptance letter from a German university, proof of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses and health insurance coverage. 

If you’re a national of India, China, or Vietnam, you will also need to provide an APS certificate. 

If you’re looking to do an English-taught Master's programme in Germany, IU is a great choice. To get admission, you would most likely have to meet academic requirements (depending on the ECTS credit programme you’ve selected), English language proficiency and have the documents required for a study visa to Germany. As an IU student in our Master’s programmes and learning on campus in Germany within the last six months before graduation, you are qualified to apply for an 18-month post-study German work visa. This allows you to remain in Germany while seeking job opportunities conveniently. The German job market, particularly thriving in the tech industry, favours professionals equipped with advanced skills like a Master's degree, positioning you in an advantageous spot for securing gainful employment. 

This depends on the university you are applying to! AT IU, you will need to have a final grade of at least “satisfactory” or Grade C equivalent (minimum 3,5 in the German grading scale) in your previous undergraduate degree.

In most cases, Master’s in Germany do not require a GRE score. However, since IU offers English-taught Master’s in Germany, it is important that you have at least B2-level proficiency in English, with the relevant proof of language skills. You can take a variety of language tests to prove your English skills – check the entry requirements section of our programmes (or this page) to see your options. 

Different universities have different intake dates. Applying to study at IU is quick and easy! For most of our English-taught Master's degrees in Germany, we offer four intakes: January, April, July or October. Starting your application to study in Germany is as easy as filling out our online application form.   

Remember, if you are a non-EU or international student, we encourage you to apply in time to obtain your German student visa. Students from India, Vietnam and China also require an APS certificate to study in Germany. This process can take a few months, so factor this into your plan. Due to education policies in Germany, public universities charge only a minimal fee for masters degrees. However, these tend to be taught in German too. IU offers affordable Masters degrees in Germany taught in English, perfect for international students. The tuition fees for our masters in tech programmes start upwards of €500 a month, however we do offer seasonal fee reductions.

Make sure you set aside budget for other study abroad costs in Germany such as living costs, accommodation, transportation, and more.

To get a Germany student visa, follow these steps:

• Apply to a university: First, apply and get accepted into a Master's degree programme at a German university.

• Receive Admission Letter: Once accepted, the university will provide you with an admission letter.

• Prepare documents: Gather all required documents including your valid passport, proof of financial means, health insurance, and proof of university admission.

• Apply for visa: Contact the German embassy or consulate in your home country to apply for a student visa. Fill out the application form and submit it along with your documents. If you live in India, China, or Vietnam, you will also need to obtain an APS certificate.

• Attend visa interview: You may need to attend an interview at the embassy or consulate.

• Wait for approval: After submitting your application, wait for it to be processed. This can take several weeks, so apply well in advance.

• Receive visa: Once approved, you will receive your Germany student visa.

Remember, as an international student, you may also need to apply for a residence permit after arriving in Germany. Make sure to check the specific requirements for international students studying in Germany on the official websites.
