Sustainability is more than just climate protection
Offsetting CO2 emissions? Of course! But that's not enough for us. As an institution of higher education, sustainability matters to us. Accessible education for everyone, regardless of their background, enables us to live more sustainably – and together, protect our planet. The pursuit of a healthy and intact environment and society is the benchmark for our behaviour, teaching, and research.

Sustainable Through Education
People and entire societies grow through individual education, and everyone deserves the same opportunities.
Developing countries lack the know-how and financial resources. As the initiator and academic partner of the Study Access Alliance Africa, we provide people with the opportunity for higher education: With 100,000 scholarships for online degrees. This is an important first step towards diversity and equality, but it is only the beginning. As an institution committed to sustainability, our goal is even greater.
Climate-neutral since 2020
IU is the first university in the world to operate at climate neutrality: in our teaching and as a company.
We offset our CO2 emissions by supporting four recognised climate protection projects:
Clean drinking water for communities in Malawi
This IU Group-financed Micro-Scale Voluntary Project Activity, in Kasungu, Malawi, provides safe drinking water to communities. It reduces the need to boil water as a means of purification through the repair of damaged boreholes and the drilling of additional new ones in the Traditional Authorities of Santhe and Kawamba located in Kasungu District. By providing safe water, the project will ensure that households consume less firewood during the process of water purification. As a result there will be a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from combustion.
Improved cookstoves for communities in Uganda
As part of this project, we support the replacement of conventional and less efficient cookstoves in Uganda with improved cookstoves. Three objectives are being pursued: reducing fuel consumption, improving the health of the population in Uganda, and reducing deforestation.
More than 90% of households in Uganda use firewood or charcoal for cooking. Therefore, cooking with wood is one of the main reasons for deforestation in the country. Since the improved cookstoves distributed within this programme are much more efficient, they use significantly less wood. This not only saves CO2 emissions but also improves people's health by reducing indoor air pollution.
Kariba Forest Protection Project
This project empowers women microentrepreneurs in rural areas by providing micro-loans for solar lamps and water filters, crucial in regions where reliable power is scarce. Solar lamps replace kerosene lamps, reducing carbon emissions and risks of fire and respiratory diseases. Water filters eliminate the need to boil water, saving time and decreasing pressure on local forests by reducing firewood demand.
These initiatives improve daily life: children can study after dark, and shop owners extend business hours. Organised into self-help groups, women support each other and promote clean energy use. Clean energy leaders manage product servicing, while demonstrators educate others, spreading the benefits of sustainable practices. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing living conditions, this project contributes significantly to climate action and community well-being.
Improving cookstoves across the country in Zambia
In Zambia, open-fire cooking is a major contributor to household air pollution, posing significant health risks. This climate project aims to distribute improved cookstoves to households. These stoves burn biomass fuels more efficiently, significantly reducing greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, which benefits both human health and the environment. The project also fosters local employment opportunities and enhances indoor air quality, leading to fewer respiratory issues. Moreover, families benefit from reduced fuel costs and time savings, illustrating the far-reaching impact of transitioning to more sustainable cooking practices.
Our Commitment to Sustainability and Climate Neutrality
At IU, we take sustainability seriously. We are dedicated to fostering an environment that promotes climate neutrality and sustainable practices across all operations.

Championing green energy

In addition to our climate protection projects, we have developed an action plan to reduce our emissions by switching to sustainable green energy. For us, climate and environmental protection mean using natural resources sparingly, avoiding waste, and protecting air, water, and soil.
Grow My Tree: Supporting reforestation efforts

With the help of our students, we are making the world a little greener: powered by Impact Hero, we are planting trees to compensate for our CO2 emissions. Although our programmes are on campus, an IU education is online-friendly—we encourage our students to opt for digital study materials instead of having us send them printed documents. For every 20 digital scripts chosen over paper ones, we plant one tree. Through this initiative, we have since planted 25,005 trees... and counting!
Bee Pasture Sponsorships

In cooperation with the non-profit organisation Bienenweide e.V., we support the mission to protect the habitat of bees and other insects. With every fifth new enrolment at our university, we sponsor one square metre of bee pasture, which is planted with regional seed mixes to provide enough food for dying insect species.
B Corp Certification

We made it!
IU Group (IUG) is a certified B Corporation following the successful completion of an audit process by the independent non-profit organization B Lab, signifying that IUG meets high standards in terms of social and environmental impact.
