FAQs

Study Abroad Alliance: FAQs

General Information

What is the Study Abroad Alliance?

The Study Abroad Alliance is astudy model at IU where you can start online at IU and finish your degree at one of IU’s partner universities around the world. This means that the first semesters (depending on the study programme you chose, semesters at IU vary) of your studies will be at IU in an online study format. In the final semesters, you’ll go abroad and finish on campus at your chosen partner university.

Which partner universities does IU have?

We currently have a list of partner universities in USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and Europe. And our network continues to grow day by day with new partners across the world. For our latest full list of partners, please click here.

Which degree will I receive?

You will only receive the partner university’s degree at the end of your studies

Will I be enrolled in both IU and the partner university?

No, you'll only be enrolled online at IU during the first semesters of your study programme. Once you are accepted at the partner university through the Study Abroad Alliance programme, your contract with IU will be terminated. You will then continue the remaining duration of your studies at the partner university.

How many semesters do I have to study at IU?

Depending on the study programme you chose, ECTS credits vary. The ECTS credits of your study programme will determine how long you will be studying at IU – usually between 1 to 3 years.

What happens if I change my mind and want to finish my degree at IU?

No worries, you can either finish your studies online or apply to switch to our own campuses in Germany if your study program is offered there.

How will the Study Abroad Alliance benefit me as a student?

  • You can save on overall study costs for your degree since you will only have to pay for a few semesters of tuition fees in the partner university (instead of 3 – 4 years). During your first semesters at IU, you can also save on tuition fees through our online scholarship programme. In sum, your study costs will be less expensive than studying your entire degree at the partner university.
  • When you transfer to on-campus studies overseas in the partner university, you will already be in the country where you’d like to build a future in. This will facilitate job market entry and boost your global employability after graduation.
  • You will gain valuable expertise in your field of study, which will help you stand out in the competitive job market.
  • In terms of migration: You have already set foot into your dream country, and this will facilitate long-term visa application process down the road.
  • You can experience both flexible online studies (at IU) as well as on-campus studies (at the partner university).

Can I know which universities/countries are in the pipeline?

Currently, further partnerships are still in negotiation / discussion. Therefore, we are not able to disclose any information until the partnerships are confirmed. Location-wise, we are currently discussing more partnerships in USA, Canada, Ireland and the UK.

Eligibility and Application

What do I have to do to be eligible to apply for the Study Abroad Alliance programme?

It is necessary to complete all courses of the first semesters before you go abroad (except for those in the final semesters). However, due to IU’s online study format, you can choose the sequence in which you complete them during your time at IU.

How can I apply for the Study Abroad Alliance programme?

Once you’re enrolled as an online student at IU, you will be granted access to our online learning platform, myCampus. You can then apply for the Study Abroad Alliance programme through myCampus.

Your application will be reviewed by IU and forwarded directly to the partner university. Once accepted, the partner university will get directly in contact with you. You and/or the partner university will be required to let IU know about your acceptance and planned transfer date.

What documents do I need for the application?

This depends on the partner university you apply for. It will only slightly differ from the documents you have already sent over when you applied at IU. The requirements for your application will be listed in your application process. This way you’ll be able to send over all the required documents at one go.

When can I apply for the Study Abroad Alliance programme?

You will have to apply for the SAA about one year ahead, before you start your final semesters. Make sure you set aside enough time to sort out your visa application and accommodation abroad.

What about visa application?

You will need a visa to study on campus at the partner university. You will be in charge of organising your own visa application and ensure that you meet all requirements and deadlines.

How long will it take until I know that I have been accepted?

Depending on the partner university, the time of your acceptance differs. However, don’t worry – between your acceptance letter and your enrolment date, there enough time for you to apply for a visa.

Where can I sign up?

If you have not previously downloaded our brochure, please click here to request for additional information. Ready to get started? Simply fill out our online application form and our Sales Team will get in touch with you (again).

Accomodation and fees

What about accommodation?

Depending on the partner university, university accommodations might be available. If a partner university provides private accommodation, we will also outline this on our website. Please make sure to set aside enough time to look for and book an accommodation beforehand.

What are the partner universities’ fees like?

This depends on partner university. You will only pay the fees for the time you’ll study at that partner university. IU study fees will not accrue from that moment on.

How do I pay my final semesters fees?

Please discuss the fee payment process with the partner university once you have been accepted.

What are IU study fees like?

You will find information on IU’s online study fees on our website. As an online student, you will also be eligible for up to a 1.444€ discount. Please reach out to our Study Advisors for more information.
